By the time he returned to his home country, Lovett was inspired enough to try his hand at being a professional musician. By Lovett was signed and his self-titled debut album came out the year after, a critically acclaimed effort which saw all five of its singles reach the top 40 of the country charts.
Here was a rather unknown musician to me playing an amazing cover of one of my favorite songs. It was a few years later when I started looking into him more and actually realizing that he was not just a country music singer.
While his voice was memorable on Friend of the Devil, the real kicker for me was hearing his live albums, then seeing him live for the first time at Edgefield winery in Oregon. He played with His Large Band and it was epic! I hate to pigeon hole any musician, but especially Lyle. His songs range from Country to Rock, to Blues and Gospel. He always rocks the house with any version of If I Had a Boat.
I have lost count of the number of times I have seen him. It's almost a guilty addiction I have. Just last August while in Eugene, OR I was having surgery on my ankle, but had plans for the show that evening. I happened to meet Lyle on the street where he autographed my guitar and spoke with me for a few minutes. That evening he spoke to my girlfriend and I from the stage and followed it up by a song we had discussed on the street.
He's a true gentleman and a great artist with an amazing sense of humor. I am no longer at all embarrassed to admit he's my favorite living guitarist. We already have our tickets for the September show in Fairbanks, AK. It's sure to be another great memory. Read more. Report as inappropriate. Seeing Lyle Lovett and His Large Band is just so wonderful for me, and seeing them in such an intimate setting as the Cheyenne Civic Center, AND having front-row center seats with my wife was, really, almost like a dream come true.
So my favorite performers, in no particular order being the Grateful Dead, Cheap Trick, Prince, and Lyle Lovett and His Large Band speaks to both the diversity of my tastes and the quality of the performers. Lyle Lovett and His Large Band is really like seeing a "Big Band" from the 's or '40's just much "hipper", and the talent of the band I think is unrivaled.
I think Lyle has a great voice and is a wonderful "story-teller" which I absolutely love. His drive for perfection is obvious and he also, obviously, has a great time performing which makes it all the more wonderful. If you have a "taste" for diverse music I would not pass up and opportunity to see this band as it is well worth the money. The format, Lyle and Colvin in chairs angled to see each other and the audience, is wrong for a small or mid-size theater The intimacy such a format offers in a club setting is lost in a venue with large orchestra and balcony sections Leading to much of the presentation being lost, particularly the conversation and banter between the two Lyle is a funny guy, the laughter from those able to hear his quips was clear evidence of that But much of it was lost to those in the balcony The two alternated playing songs from their respective catalogs The banter, combined with the back and forth deprived the show of any rhythm or pace It got to be a slog Like I said, disappointing I've wanted to see Lyle for a while, just picked the wrong format and venue to see him at his best I'll go see him again Coming from someone that has always to the hard rock bands, I found the show to be most captivating.
The music and the members of the band had everyone asking for more as the night went on, and the talent each member displayed was truly remarkable. To have the talent and the showmanship beyond measure, added to the tastefulness of the evening being unforgettable.
Thanks goes to Lyle Lovett, his stage presence, his music and his selection of artists playing with him. It was an evening to remember.
