With the machine gone, Logan taught Calvin some Asian Zen meditation techniques that would continue to help him suppress his powers.
Although the mediation helped calm Calvin, his powers remained uncontrollable, bringing back all of the original X-Men's powers permanently.
He relocated to a small research station in Siberia where friends of his late father and Charles Xavier tried to analyze his powers. While Rankin was away, the Psychic Entity called Onslaught sent agents to attack the base. X-Force responded to the distress call that the station had sent out, but all they found were bodies and the furious Calvin Rankin, who blamed X-Force for the deaths of other researchers. After causing an explosion while mimicking Sunspot 's powers, he was kidnapped by Onslaught.
After helping him stabilize his powers and helping him reform his mind, the Mimic became one of the few servants of Onslaught, not knowing that it had been Onslaught who had wrought the chaos in Siberia. Members of X-Force later encountered the Mimic again, along with his comrade, the Blob , who had also joined Onslaught's ranks. One of his missions was to protect the Mutant Risque from Mr.
Sinister and make sure that she complied on a mission to have Warpath join them. However during the mission, Onslaught was taken down by a combination of Avengers and X-Men while Mimic and Risque were captured and imprisoned by Operation: Zero Tolerance for their terrorist activities with Onslaught.
Locked in a secret Peruvian S. Because he retained Professor X's telepathic signature, he was detected by Excalibur. They traveled to his location hoping to find Xavier, but found and freed Rankin instead. He briefly joined Excalibur, and even attended Captain Britain's wedding. While he was a member of Excalibur, he became good friends with Dr.
Moira MacTaggert , who was interested in his behavior. In her study, they made the discovery that many of Rankin's anger issues were the result of a bipolar disorder from which he had not known he had suffered. With Professor Xavier still in jail for his crimes as Onslaught, the Mimic joined Mystique 's Brotherhood of Mutants to assist them in freeing him alongside members of the X-Men.
Alongside his teammates, the Mimic lost his templated powers due to the High Evolutionary 's use of a device that halted the use of all mutant powers. When that device was halted and mutants regained their powers, the Mimic did as well. This version of the Brotherhood would later disband and everyone in the group went their separate ways. Calvin Rankin decided to stay in San Francisco and continued his vigilantism.
Because of his activities and past history, he was captured by Baron Zemo and Songbird alongside his old comrade, the Blob, who put them in the Folding Castle 's Detention Quadrant. After this incarnation of the Thunderbolts was disbanded and the events of Civil War , Calvin was freed alongside other prisoners and registered as a super human working out of San Francisco.
While chasing down some criminals, Calvin's powers again went haywire and he accidentally killed a pedestrian with his optic blast. Instead of facing time in prison, he was offered a new position by Norman Osborn , who had recently taken over as the new head of H. Rankin eventually agreed. After joining Osborn's X-Men, Calvin Rankin, the Mimic, received a new regular outfit and had his long hair cut and his beard, his mustache, and his sideburns all shaven off to look good for the public image.
Being seen on various television screens and being praised by the public aided Rankin in his belief that he was finally becoming the hero that he was always meant to be, but that made it no easier to work with his other teammates. While trying to interrogate a former human who had been transferred to a nano-sentinel by Simon Trask , the creature was smashed by Weapon Omega , who yelled at Calvin, telling him that this was their own personal hell.
Though most of his teammates were unstable, many of them were able to get along with the Mimic, who did not see things as clearly as his enemies did and was sure that he was doing the right thing. After a week of protecting San Francisco from various dangers, Osborn's team of X-Men were attacked by the actual members of the X-Men. When members Dark Beast and Weapon Omega were down for the count, Emma Frost revealed to everyone that she was a traitor by knocking out Daken.
When the Mimic began to question what was going on, obviously confused over everything that was happening, he too was knocked out by Namor McKenzie, the Sub-Mariner , who also betrayed Osborn. While he was unconscious, two of his other teammates, Cloak and Dagger , joined the X-Men.
It was speculated that Namor felt that the Mimic was too far gone into Osborn's lies to be able to be convinced on the short time they had and was too powerful to fight against while Cloak and Dagger were already unhappy with their decision of joining the team. The Mimic was outmatched by the sheer number of mutants, and was beaten down by a group of them. Osborn later retreated with his team after it became clear that he could not win without murdering them in cold blood on live television.
However, Osborn and America took this as a victory as the 'mutant terrorists' had left US soil. Osborn re-presented his X-Men team that were going to stay on, and the Mimic was still a member, smiling to the public and working for the government to take down any possible threats.
Dark X-Men: The Beginning 1. Under the power of Norman Osborn, and the leadership of Mystique once again, the Mimic remained a member of the "X-Men," but his depression was becoming a problem. During one of their missions, the team was sent to a small town in California and eventually found X-Man , who was trapped in various different consciousnesses.
During their conflict, the Mimic copied his abilities by accident, and was able to see a vision of his own future where he killed his wife, Vera and their newborn child with his optic blasts. His teammate, Omega, was also overpowered by X-Man's telekinetic energy, and the Mimic had to take him down.
Despite the damage done to the town, Osborn's people were able to make it look more like a victory, and the town erected statues of both Rankin and Omega. But these events turned the depressive Calvin into even more of an unstable mess, and even though X-Man attempted to show him how to use his new precognitive ability, Cal was still unable to tame his demons.
During X-Man's attack on Osborn and his Avengers , Rankin found himself unable to move, as he was given his recent life choices some serious thought, mumbling the words "I was an X-Man once In the end, Cal's ability was used by Osborn to duplicate Omega's, and together, they drained X-Man till he could be taken into custody. They immediately regretted their cooperation, since X-Man could have given them exactly what they had sought.
During the Siege of Asgard , Calvin escaped with Omega , who had become his only friend. Feeding off his powers, Omega had become weak. Many methods were tried to cure him, including having the Mimic and Rogue absorb the energy from Omega in an effort to reduce it. But these backfired; the result was instead that all of them became living bombs, ready to go off at any second. After making one last attempt to cure themselves by absorbing each other's powers, Omega reabsorbed the energy from them with the plans to sacrifice himself for the greater good.
Calvin would not allow Omega to do so, asking him to live on for him Rankin if not for himself. Omega volunteered to be placed in an artificial coma to prevent him from exploding.
Mimicking Rachel Grey 's telepathic powers, the Mimic put his best friend to sleep so the energy could gradually leave his body. The Mimic contemplated that all his happiest memories were of the School and, wanting to keep an eye on Omega, asked to stay. After two hours he lost them, but he had already mimicked some of their powers.
Realising he was a mutant, the angry young man quickly chose to throw his lot with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. However, when he attacked the X-Men to prove himself, he was defeated and the Brotherhood abandoned him.
While at the Fort Terahawk prison, Calvin was visited by Charles Xavier , who convinced him to make something of his life. The Mimic became a X-Man, the sixth one. In his world, Scott Summers never went past his shyness. That was true both with the original team and an all-new, all-different team. Calvin was recognized as one of the greatest heroes of his world, where mutants were never ostracized and hunted.
He knew great success. His friendships with his fellow X-Men, especially Wolverine, were deep. However, something reportedly went wrong with a part of the timestream.
Information started to propagate. It would erase some anomalies but also some timelines , and triggers retcons in numerous realities. A bus full of kids would be blown up. Mimic would thus end on death row instead of knowing success and glory. Mimic was recruited into a small group of youths from threatened timelines.
They were assembled by a halfling-like being called the Time Broker. The Broker said that he could send them to alternate timelines to rectify anomalies, thus making sure the retcons never propagate to wreck their lives.
The youths agreed to the deal, and started dimension-hopping as the EXiles — accomplishing sometimes cryptic missions on numerous alternate Earths. For instance, the Exiles intervened to help the Imperial Guard kill Jean Grey , who in that reality was about to permanently become the Dark Phoenix.
During this fray, Calvin had both to fight his best bud Wolverine, and witness him killing Jean. Early missions also cost him two team members — Magnus and T-Bird. Both were almost immediately replaced by other people from threatened timelines, with no time to mourn. On the other hand Calvin grew close to Blink , whom he had previously made co-leader, and they later became lovers.
After an inadvertent separation from the team, Mimic spent four years on a Brood -controlled Earth. In order to survive, he was forced to kill many people who had been taken over by the Brood. Rankin was also infected, but the healing factor he had mimicked from Wolverine kept the alien embryo from taking over.
When he was reunited with his team mates, Calvin did not have time to explain what had happened as they were caught in another battle.
Mimic was injured during this fight, his healing factor was overwhelmed and the Brood embryo became dominant.
Mimic was saved, but not before he killed fellow Exile Sunfire. Mimic went there and it was a complete surprise. After Mimic defeated the Doombots, Namor came and the first thing he done is beating Mimic and throwing him of the laboratory.
Mimic ran away and went crashing the place. Namor came and told him if Atlantis wins, Mimic and his buddies will be serving them as dogs. Mimic tried to convince Namor, but he refused. Mimic had enough and him Namor with hard bloody attacks in the lava which presumably killed Namor, plus with Mimic's attacks. When Mimic came back to the place where the Exiles are done beating the soldiers, Mimic told Blink that he's fine, but Blink was not sure of that.
When Mimic and the Exiles went to the Lizard's reality, Mimic was acting a little strange with his bad mood. Blink asked him if he was alright. Mimic told Blink that he is fine. Blink was really asking Mimic lot's of times. When the Exiles reached the Lizard , Dr. Connors told everyone to get away. Connors is the Lizard! Mimic lied to Dr. Connors that they are the Avengers. After Mimic convinced him to not blow the bay, Dr.
Connors was crying to tears and he won't blow up the bay, but Dr. Connors killed himself with a shot of a bullet. Mimic confesed to Blink that his problem was that he wanted to keep Dr.
Connors to be safe and get out of this bay. And then Mimic and the Exiles teleported to the next reality. On the next reality, Doctor Strange kidnapped Sunfire and Mimic was held captive prisoner. Blink and the other Exiles rescued them and beat Doc Strange. After that, Blink sense something from the Tallus. The Tallus then teleported Mimic and the Exiles on a reality so mysterious and very familiar.
It was soon discovered that it was Mojo who did all this. Mojo teleported Mimic and the Exiles to his Mojoverse. Mojo had captured Morph and Nocture.
Mimic and the remaining Exile members escaped the activity place and went to the central city of Mojoverse. Mimic grabbed a person sneedly and told the man where is Longshot. The man told him that he is in the Mojoverse jail.
They defeated the Soldiers and freed Longshot. Longshot told the Exiles that he can't escape. Mimic tried to convince him but it was no use. So Mimic told Blink to tell Sasquatch to grab Longshot and get out of here. After they reached Mojo's enterprises, they saw Morph and Nocture. Morph was not harmed, but they tortured Nocture.
Mimic told everyone to get out, but Morph went to Mojo and hit all of Morph's strength. The Timebroker came to get the Exiles and went to the next reality. The healing factor he copied from Wolverine suppressed the infection, and after being reunited with his teammates he chose to keep it a secret. After sustaining an injury in battle, his healing factor which was only working at half of Wolverine's capacity to begin with was not able to heal him while continually keeping the Brood infection at bay.
Mimic began to transform into a Brood. During the ensuing battle with his teammates, Mariko Yashida was buried under a ton of rubble and killed attempting to protect the nearby civilians. While Calvin already blamed himself for Sunfire's death, Morph lashed out. He pointed out that it was Mimic's disregard for his teammates that lead to Sunfire's death.
Mimic recovered physically, but because of this incident, Mimic swore never to allow himself to kill again. Some time later Mimic was possessed by the reality warping mutant Proteus.
Because of his vow not to take another life, Calvin hesitated in dealing the killing blow, giving Proteus the chance he needed to possess his body. After choosing Mimic, Proteus realized that his copied healing factor would allow him to remain in the body without exhausting it for longer than a normal person.
This eventually completely drained Mimic's life energy away and left his body an empty shell. His body was put into stasis in the Panoptichron , and later the Exiles returned him to his home reality for his burial.
Little is know of this Mimic's origins. During one mission with the other X-Men were sent to retrieve Ororo Munroe to join their team. Finding the Exiles' Mimic on his world he struck out, believing that Mimic to be good and honest because of a charmed life and happy upbringing.
Using his telepathy, The Big M read the Exiles' Mimic's mind and realized that the only difference between the lives they lead is that while one of them accepted Xavier's offer of training and help, the other rejected and sought a darker path.
This realization that the Exiles Mimic was able to fight for good while not living the charmed life that The Big M was jealous of allowed The Big M to stop his self-pity, and he reformed the Brotherhood as his world's X-Men. On Earth, which is an alternate future Earth twenty-four years into the future, Mimic is seen as a member of Creed and his Brotherhood, along with Sabretooth, Blob, Avalanche , Scalphunter , Caliban , and an unknown woman.
Creed and his Brotherhood are seen when Magneto assembles super-powered teams, among them the Avengers and the X-Men , and asks them all to put aside their differences and band together in the face of a common threat: the Sentinels. When this Earth's Captain America and his Avengers went to the Academy to recruit one of it's members, they found that all of the members of the Academy were killed, including the Mimic.
On Amalgam-Earth two comic universes came together when the incarnations of their respective universes referred to as "the Brothers" became aware of each other after aeons of slumber. To prevent the Brothers from destroying each other, characters from each universe battled to determine which universe would survive. To prevent total destruction, the Spectre and the Living Tribunal created a merged universe, in which only Axel Asher and Dr.
Strangefate knew the truth. Each struggled against the other to reverse or preserve the change. Meta Mimic's past is unknown to himself. Magneto and the Magnetic Men arrived on the island of Genosha to defeat his evil brother the Sinistron and free thousand of captured mutants.
Failing in his task, Magneto freed the captured mutants and saved the day. This Mimic is a member of an alternate team of Exiles. In this reality the Grandmaster decided to created a team of Exiles identical to the original team of Exiles. After the "classic Exiles" fight "the all-new Exiles" in the words of Morph , it is later revealed that the whole thing was a scheme orchestrated by the Grandmaster , seeking revenge on the Exiles for freeing Professor X on their first mission and ruining a bet.
The Exiles, past and present, join forces with the Wrecking Crew of that Earth to defeat the Grandmaster. Mimic is a member of Bucky's strike team that is sent to Genosha. Upon arrival Cal gains the powers of the mutants on Genosha, going by the code name the Mimic. Mimic and Nuke fight Magneto's guards, as Bucky fails to kill Magneto and kills Xavier instead before the entire team is taken out.
Mimic battles Magneto and is killed by the mutant.
